Welcome from the President
Michael Hibner, President 2009-2010
Dear Colleagues:
Welcome to the new season of the Phoenix Ob/Gyn Society. Last year we celebrated a half century of our Society, and it was one of the more successful seasons in our history. We held our monthly dinners at Vincent’s and had great attendance along with interesting presentations. Our Mid-Winter Symposium was well received, and for the first time we had a live surgery presentation.
This new season presents us with big challenges. The changing economy has left drug companies with less funds to sponsor medical events and new PhRMA codes have changed the way those companies are allowed to spend their money. For this new year, we have significantly less money, which made us very cautious in planning this year's events. We have decided to keep our dues the same; they will remain at 370 dollars/year for active members, and 150 dollars/year for retired physicians. Because a significant number of our members practice in the North Valley, we have decided to change the venue of our monthly dinner meetings to Maggiano’s, which is located on the corner of Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright. This restaurant is located close to Loop 101, making the commute from all around the Valley quite easy. We hope this move will attract new members, and of course keep all our existing members. Like in the years past, our monthly dinners will be sponsored by drug companies. We understand that some of the members of our Society view those talks as “too influenced by industry”. We will do our best to screen the speakers and topics, but since our dues will not cover all of our monthly meetings and Spring Social Dinner which includes members and spouses/guests, we have to rely on drug company support.
Another change the Board made for the coming year is to not host a Mid-Winter Symposium. In the past few years, the attendance at the Symposium has decreased, and with declining sponsorship from drug companies, we will not be able to afford our winter meeting. In place of the Symposium, we would like to hold a Golf Tournament and 5K run in March. We would like to make this event both social and educational. Additionally, we would like to involve residents from both Ob/Gyn residency programs in the Valley; by being present at the tournament they will have a chance to interact with members of the Society.
We have a difficult year ahead of us and I would encourage all the old members to stay with the Society and try to make as many meetings as possible. Also, please try to attract as many new members as you can. The future of Phoenix Ob/Gyn Society really depends on all of us participating.
Thank you, and see you in September.
Sincerely,
Michael Hibner, MD
